On the one hand, returning, they prepared spices and fragrant oils, on the other hand, also they rested on the sabbath according to the commandment (Luke 23:56)
It is Friday—two days and two nights since the Messiah was crucified and laid in a tomb. The shock of His death remains heavy upon the minds of His disciples, for they did not yet understand that the Prophets declared He must die and be raised on the third day. On Wednesday, when Christ was crucified, Pilate allowed His body to be removed from the cross and laid in a tomb. On Thursday, Israel honored the sabbath for the Feast of Unleavened Bread. Now, on Friday, the women who had come from Galilee are preparing spices and oils for His body before they must honor the seventh-day Sabbath, so that they are ready to anoint His body on the first day of the week after the sabbaths.
