Last week, we were in the book of James and we were talking about... the approving of our faith. And this is over in James chapter one, verses three and four, where we were focusing on that. So here James is writing, he says, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. We have a couple of different concepts of testing here because in verse two, you have your word trials. Remember trials is a type of testing that the intent is for failure. You're looking to cause failure. So trials have kind of two sides to it. One is a temptation to do something that lacks in character, and the other is putting you under pressure to cause failure. But we also have the other word for testing here that we looked at, which is a testing for approval. That is, you are actually looking for what is good in something. You are not looking for failure points. So trials actually give us an opportunity to test our faith. Is our faith actually in God or is it in man? Have we learned something from man and we've been applying that and it's ultimately failing? That goes back to the fact that we're not taking God at his work.
