And this is the confidence we have toward Him: that if we ask according to His desirous will, He hears us. And if we intuitively know that He hears us—whatever we ask—we know that we have the things we have asked from Him (1 John 5:14–15).
When making a request to God, it is important to ask in the proper manner. We are petitioning from a lesser to a greater—a fact that may seem obvious, yet if we insist on our own will over God’s, we are, in effect, asking as though we are equals.
God’s desirous will seeks what is best for us, for we know that “all things work together for good to those who love God” (Romans 8:28). Therefore, our requests should align with who we are in Christ—asking in His character—not with the intent to satisfy the desires of the flesh.
When we pray, especially in times of anxiety, let us begin with thanksgiving, proceed to worship, and then offer supplication and requests while seeking His will (Philippians 4:6).
