And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat from the fruit of the trees in the garden. But from the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God said, ‘You will not eat from it and do not touch it, lest you die.’” Genesis 3:2–3.
Lucifer used the form of the serpent to thoroughly deceive Eve into eating the fruit of the forbidden tree. He began by questioning what they were permitted to eat. In response, Eve reiterated what Adam had told her God had said. We know this is from Adam because God told Adam, “Of every tree of the garden you may freely eat, but of the tree of the knowledge of good (beneficial) and evil (causes calamity) you will not eat, for in the day that you eat of it, dying you will die.”. In contrast, Eve stated they were not even to touch it.
Adam’s adjustment of God’s word underscores the importance of not adding to it—even if the intention is good. Satan is going to use this against Eve to manipulate her into partaking of the tree and thereby transgressing the law.
