Therefore, Christ suffered in flesh on our behalf, you all also arm yourselves with the same insight, because the one who suffers in flesh is in a state of ceasing from sin, for the purpose to no longer of the desires of men, but of the desirous will of God, to live the remaining time in flesh (1 Peter 4:1–2)
In Christ, the believer has the potential to live a life apart from sin. We are not only declared righteous before God in Christ, but we are also granted all things pertaining to life and godliness, so that we may live out a life characterized by righteousness. However, when we choose to cease from sinning by applying the truth—the doctrine concerning how we have victory over the sin nature: Know that you have died with Christ and have been raised to walk in newness of life, which renders the rule of the sin nature ineffective (Romans 6:4–6); Reckon this to be true of yourself (Romans 6:11); and Yield your members as instruments of righteousness (Romans 6:13)—we will suffer.
We have spent enough of our past life living according to the will of the Gentiles—in lewdness, strong desires, drunkenness, revelries, drinking parties, and abominable idolatries. When we choose to cease from sin, unbelievers will find it strange that we do not run with them into the same flood of dissipation, and they will attribute false things to us. When this happens, let us remember that it is a gracious privilege to be permitted to share in the sufferings of Christ.
