Your word dispensation literally means the household rule. If you break it apart and you actually define it, that's what it literally means, is a household rule. Our household rule is grace. Well, what does that mean? Grace is God's attitude whereby he gives us a benefit without consideration of merit. Why do I translate it that way? Or why do I define it that way, I should say? Because grace is not unmerited favor. Now, you see the difference between those two? If it's unmerited favor, there's the potential that I could merit it. But if it does not consider merit, is there anything I can do to earn it? That's not possible because it doesn't consider whether I could or could not earn it. We have what we have in Christ because God chose to give us the benefit.
