After his fall, Cain went out from the presence of the Lord and dwelt in the land of Nod, east of Eden (Genesis 4:16). Here, he built a city, violating God’s penalty placed upon him. Through this act of disobedience, Satan seized an opportunity to usurp authority over the earth by setting up an ordered system to manage the life and course of humans and the world they live in. Through Cain’s sons Satan developed commerce (Genesis 4:20), culture (Genesis 4:21), industry (Genesis 4:22), and a judicial system (Genesis 4:23-24). This system cultivated the attitude and conduct of humans, resulting in every formation of their hearts being continually focused on evil (Genesis 6:5).
